537 - The Fantasy Of Hot Properties

[8:55 AM]  Mr. Blue:
Watched The Neverending Story. Probably for the 10th time but first time in like 25 years
It's good, probably better as an adult than as a kid
As a kid i liked the visuals but just found it confusing
As an adult its the opposite... effects looked cheap but story was good
[8:59 AM]
You should try the book.  It's amazing.
First movie covered about 1/4
And the movie (justly) pissed off Germany
Though I admit I liked the movie too
[9:00 AM]  Mr. Blue:
Why?
[9:00 AM]
Why did it piss them off?
It skipped a lot
Missed some big points
Didn't happen the same way
Characters weren't right
And most decidedly it did NOT complete the structure that the title came from.
I can't remember if even Gmork explained himself properly and why he was there.
Maybe
Been too long
[9:04 AM]  Mr. Blue:
He said he was sent by whoever was in charge of The Nothing to make sure Atreyu didn't complete his quest
that was after he told Atreyu how to complete his quest
and then lunged at him and died easily
[9:06 AM]
Yeah...no
He was a human from Earth
Sent to kill Atreyu so he'd fail
[9:07 AM]  Mr. Blue:
i guess that makes sense but that's not how they explained it
[9:08 AM]
Because earth powers from the real world knew they could take over and control the earth if humans were hopeless and had nothing to dream of or hope for.
[9:08 AM]  Mr. Blue:
he did mention something about that
but never said he was from earth or who his "boss" was
he did say that without dreams people are easier to control, which is why he was helping The Nothing
if they went into greater detail it'd probably have needed to be like 2 1/2 hours and kids would've tuned out
[9:10 AM]
Nod
It's a vast experience
[9:11 AM]  Mr. Blue:
although.. runtime was only like 1:45
probably coulda squeezed in 5-10 more minutes for exposition
[9:11 AM]
Think they ended up doing 3 to try...
Just failed completely though
[9:11 AM]  Mr. Blue:
3 films?
[9:11 AM]
yes
[9:11 AM]  Mr. Blue:
yeah i watched 2 a few times as a kid too
[9:11 AM]
I saw some of the second
[9:12 AM]  Mr. Blue:
as a kid i remember liking 1 and 2 equally
the critics definitely did not
3 looks and sounds like absolute shit
for some reason as a kid i'd pick the sequel to watch first
[9:12 AM]
"Netflix presents The Neverending Story"
There...they'd have a chance
[9:13 AM]  Mr. Blue:
so i saw 2 first then was bummed that it was different characters in 1
but i think it'd have been better if they got all the same people
To be honest i didn't like gmork dying. seemed like a neat character that'd be better off redeeming himself somehow.  like the Grinch
The Atreyu / Artax swamp scene really wrecked me as a kid
[9:17 AM]
Artax giving up is touted as one of the most traumatic events in "kid" film history.
Gmork and Atreyu have a decidedly different last encounter.
Lotta bad stuff happens in the book
Keeps you involved for sure
Ol' road to Hell...good intentions stuff.
Then it gets worse
Great book
Probably my #3
Tons of beauty too, of course...it is Fantastica/Fantasia after all

[9:48 AM]
[9:57 AM]  Mr. Blue:
Should i invest in graphene?
[10:01 AM]
Not sure how you would.
Have to find which companies are doing the best research I guess.
Stuff is the closest thing to magic other than actual magic ;)
"Oh...turns out you can make a lightbulb of it that is much more efficient than LED, brighter, and lasts longer."
"Yawn...turns out if you dope it with a little diamond dust it's nearly frictionless is all..."
"Sigh...well...I mean, once it's in the right configuration it's a superconductor switchable to a resistor...no biggy."
"Meh...it's just carbon atoms an atom thick that's stronger than steel..."
"Wellll...it's kinda hard to make a lot of it except for this new process that just automatically makes like 20"x20" sheets we worked out... What evs..."
[10:07 AM]  Mr. Blue:
maybe invest in pencil companies
they probably hoard the stuff
[10:07 AM]
heh
[10:08 AM]  Mr. Blue:
The Acme #2 Pencil and Invisible Superconductor Concern
[10:08 AM]
I'm not sure you can write with graphene like graphite.  Probably....Probably permanent, Probably can write on tungsten and never wears out.
[10:11 AM]  Mr. Blue:
Probably need a lot of graphite to make graphene though, right
[10:54 AM]
Well it's an atom thick...so...no

[10:05 AM]
Check this one out - INVESTIGATIONS BY KING
"Forsooth!"
[10:05 AM]  Mr. Blue:
"The case of the queen's missing head"
[10:06 AM]
"His Majesty of Scottdale PA hath decreed a rousting of the peasantry in investigation of claims of witchery!"
I have to admit, it's a wonderful business name
The Case of the Queen's Missing Head sounds like one of those mysteries that will be officially “solved” by the king and involve a politically inconvenient noble with a lot of property.
"Treason!  Treason I say!  Shalt be executed and thy lands granted to the father of my new mistress!"
"It is a crime tantamount to the scandalous 'Case of the Earl Who Found a Silver Mine' of two Summers gone!"

[12:07 PM]
OH!
Earlier this week
Real estate show.
Walk-thru on the lowest prices I'd seen on one.
$75000...another was $44000
Naturally they were doing a walkthrough and virtually spending huge amounts of “update” money.
"We can do the kitchen for X...we can knock that out for Y."
get to the stairs...
"There's no handrail."  "No...but we can put one in."
(me) "For $650!"
(other person) LOL!
[point: there was no price quoted for a hand rail...]
But not 30 seconds later...next room
"Well, they did a partial crown molding in this bedroom for some reason.  We could finish that off and the room will look a lot better."
(Price popup) "Crown Molding - $650!"
(me) "GEEEE-zus!!!  $650 For 20' of crown molding and some paint??? I think I underestimated the hand rail!"
(other) "No kidding!"
[12:41 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Wait, was this in town?
[12:41 PM]
No
It was one of those "Pick one house out of three and remodel" TV shows
They should go up to Butler and do one in “The Island”
(Establishing shot of flaking paint factory house, 14" grass lawn, sheriff sale paper taped to window.  Realtor/Redecorator Host and buyer go to front door, opens without using key)
"So here's house #2.  It's listed at $10000 so it's still in your budget.  As you can see, the front door conveniently opens right to the living room."
"Nice feature."
"Very hot right now..."
(doubtful) Hmmmm.  Seems kind of bare over there."
"Well, I'm thinking we can stack some milk crates and boards for a shelf unit here...and put a carpet sample to cover the hole there."
"Ohhh...maybe... Hmmm."
**Ching! (Price popup) “Crates and carpet - $0 if no one looking.”
[12:53 PM]  Mr. Blue:
oh okay
Those shows that are like: "He's a janitor, and his wife sells acorns door-to-door. Their budget is $2.7 million."
[12:59 PM]
Yes
"They desperately NEED a second home within 5 miles of work and with a 15000 square foot lawn for their Pekingese 'Emperor Maximilian'.  A tall order.  Can we find a palace to suit them?

[1:00 PM]  Mr. Blue:
I'm gonna retire to the Meningitis Belt!
[1:03 PM]
Appealing... what's the cost of living in the Meningitis Belt?
As high as 1000 per 100,000
[1:04 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Meningitis sounds like a weird one... and bad
Somehow a bacteria or virus or something else crosses your body's natural firewall into your brain / nervous system
No wonder humans were clamoring to get out of Africa
[1:16 PM]
(primitive Africans looking out over the Mediterranean) "Maybe their kids don't drop dead on the other side of that."
