486 - We Debate The Quintessential Horror Film And Mr. Blue Thinks It's "Halloween"

[9:15 AM]
Hey!  Good news!
[9:15 AM]  Mr. McGreen:
The Rapture, eh?
Well. Later, bitches.
[9:15 AM]  Mr. Brown:
I've been waiting to see this Nibiru
It sounds like a great planet to look at
LOL
[9:16 AM]
The Rapture info say anything about God crashing a planet into Earth?
[9:17 AM]  Mr. McGreen:
Not that I recall
[9:17 AM]
I'm a little hazy on the text in that section.
[9:18 AM]  Mr. McGreen:
I read about a potential Earth 2 last night
20 lightyears away
One side burnt to a crisp and the other an ice age but in the middle is "liveable"
But plants would be black and it would be constant sundown with red skies
[9:19 AM]
"And the Chosen were flung into the ionosphere when God banked Nibiru off two cushions into the Earth and dropped the 7 ball in the side pocket."
"And the angel keeping score did hoot for the third time."
[9:20 AM]  Mr. Blue:
Isn't that Gliese 581c?
[9:20 AM]  Mr. McGreen:
Yes
[9:21 AM]
Chapter 12, verse 5, yes.
[9:21 AM]  Mr. McGreen:
LOL

[1:05 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Good question:  you make a friend who has never seen a horror movie... What's the first you show them?
[1:05 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Halloween, probably
[1:06 PM]  Mr. Brown:
Friday 13th
[1:06 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
The original Friday the 13th?
With his mommy?
Sorry *spoiler*
[1:06 PM]  Mr. Brown:
Yes
Where Kevin Bacon gets killed
[1:07 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Kevin Bacon was in that? Hmm.  Never noticed
I still think The Exorcist is my favorite
Sooooo creepy
But I dont think it translates as well to, say, atheists
I feel like Psycho would be a good one
[1:08 PM]
I did an analysis in here one day about how ridiculously impossible Bacon's death was in that movie, considering the space underneath, the reach-around needed, the length of an arrow and the strength required. It's on the blog.
[1:10 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Poltergeist is good too
[1:11 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Poltergeist feels more like a kids fantasy movie
[1:11 PM]  Mr. Brown:
The Gate
[1:11 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Halloween is the quintessential horror film
Friday the 13th is a Halloween rip off
[1:11 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
I think a couple films could challenge Halloween as the quintessential
[1:13 PM]
Never seen a horror film?
(I had Malcolm watch Sleepy Hollow last night for his first, actually)
[1:14 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Yeah
Thats tougher to me than picking "your favorite"
Like what to start with? ...the embodiment of horror films...
[1:14 PM]  Mr. Blue:
It's Halloween
[1:14 PM]
I never thought much of Halloween, honestly
[1:14 PM]  Mr. Blue:
But it's still the quintessential horror film
It's had the most lasting influence and has been copied, parodied, ripped off the most
Like Rambo 2 isn't even the best Rambo, but it's the most “Rambo” of the Rambo films
[1:16 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Psycho, The Exorcist, The Omen, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre all came before Halloween and also had huge impacts on not only the genre, but film itself
I just dont think there's a quintessential to horror
Maybe not to any genre. IDK
[1:17 PM]
Oh, no doubt Halloween is a cultural phenomenon
[1:17 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Oh yeah
[1:17 PM]  Mr. Brown:
Black Christmas
[1:17 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Its my personal favorite of those I listed
[1:17 PM]
I like The Fog much better as a horror story though
But you can't really dress up as...fog...
(girl at party) "Ooo...you're an undead pirate on fire?"
"A guy with leprosy in the fog."
"Oh" (walks away)
[1:19 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
When you take out the slasher element, horror is pretty close to fantasy
[1:19 PM]
The Omen I've always liked
[1:19 PM]  Mr. Blue:
You could dress up as a guy from The Fog if you had a lot of dry ice
[1:19 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
That's not a bad idea
Mr. Silver, you have a pirate costume right?  Lets try it.
[1:20 PM]
Compared to a painted Captain Kirk mask and machete, it's nothing
[1:20 PM]  Mr. Blue:
You'd need the big hook, rubber cap and seaweed all over you
Psycho and The Omen aren't scary
[1:20 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
I didnt claim they are, but I'd still say horror
[1:20 PM]
"Halloween reveler passes out and dies from lack of oxygen.  Appears to have been dressed as an undead pirate on fire."
[1:21 PM]  Mr. Blue:
"Great costume Mr. Silver! Would you like to come in?"
"Ahh I'll just stay on the porch all night and tap on the sliding door, thanks"
[1:21 PM]
The Omen?
The kid himself basically does nothing but stare at the camera
[1:22 PM]  Mr. Blue:
I don't remember The Omen
[1:22 PM]
You just claimed it wasn't scary.  How would you know?
[1:22 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Its slow
[1:22 PM]  Mr. Blue:
But I'd say Psycho is psychological, not horror
Maybe psychological horror
[1:23 PM]
We could separate this topic into supernatural and psycho/thriller
Oh, and creature fear
The original Friday the 13th - at the reveal when I finally watched it - was great.
Soon as they went supernatural I started yawning
[1:25 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Jason, as we know him, didn't show up until 3
By then they were onto 3D gimmicks
[1:26 PM]
I liked Nightmare on Elm Street for the innovation and extraordinary success
[1:26 PM]  Mr. Blue:
I like the effects in that
[1:26 PM]
But I didn't think it came into it's own until 3
[1:26 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Nicely captured dreamlike states
[1:26 PM]
The entirety of #1 could be argued as she was having a dream
[1:26 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Nightmare on Elm Street 2 felt like an 80s teen movie
[1:27 PM]  Mr. Blue:
That was the gay one?
[1:27 PM]
2 was so meh I never watched it again.
[1:27 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Yeah
[1:27 PM]
"Way to mess up an idea and ruin a franchise, guys"
People were horrified by Jaws.  I only really watch the second half usually.
Eh...fish attacks.  I liked the hunt.
[1:29 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
I actually liked that more than I thought I would
[1:31 PM]
Jaws?
[1:31 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Jaws is one of my favorites
[1:31 PM]  Mr. McGreen:
Yeah, Jaws
I heard that trilogy gets aaaaaaawfull
Like a telekinetic shark
[1:32 PM]
Yup
Well...telepathic and after a particular family
[1:33 PM]  Mr. Blue:
That's the 4th one
2nd one is mediocre, 3rd is 3d and it's bad, 4th they bring back Brody's wife and the shark starts killing her family
I didn't think it was telepathic in 4, just intelligent
Been a while though. I don't even remember Michael Caine being in it
I don't even consider Jaws horror
[1:52 PM]
Creature fear film
One of the better ones.
Defining horror is tough in general
"The Black Cat" is horrifying in its way and a 4-star classic.  I got too bored to finish.
"The Shining" is a supernatural/psychological horror classic, but it doesn't exactly rush to get going.
"Alien" is sci-fi horror, as is "The Thing"
But they're just predators doing their thing...just happens to be against humans
People wouldn't call Ghost in the Darkness horror since it's just predators doing their thing too.  If the lions were from space hunting people then....
Oh wait...that's "Predator"...
:P
[1:57 PM]  Mr. Blue:
Jaws is just maybe a 'monster' movie
Not that scary... just stay out of the water and you're fine
I think horror needs to have some element of "oh shit that could happen to me"
